24 years since I had the enormous privilege of being at the Gallipoli dawn service, 75th anniversary of the landing. Qantas had flown in 58 Gallipoli survivors who could still travel. The youngest 91, the oldest 103. PM Bob Hawke and Opposition leader John Hewson were there to pay tribute. This band of proud, humble, wizened up, old men with huge hearts were helped by aides from buses down to the beach for the service where they were embraced, not just emotionally but physically by young Turks, grandchildren of those who had fought against the ANZACs. Unbelievably moving experience, without doubt the most moving of my life. Lest We Forget.
