3 reasons why Estrogen may not be the answer? So, what’s the question? The question is, “Do I need more estrogen?” A lot of women think that hot flashes indicate that you need more estrogen. This is not always true. So when is it not true? Or when do our providers feel like they are chasing their own tails trying to ease the biggest symptom of menopause? 1. When cortisol is high the brain is less sensitive to estrogen. If you are under a lot of stress (and this isn’t just the boss or the kids screaming) this can be dieting, exercising too much, not enough sleep, etc. then cortisol is over produced which can mimic an estrogen deficiency. It’s not really deficient but the brain sensors to estrogen are altered with excess cortisol. If you give too much estrogen in this instance, then estrogen excess symptoms will appear such as weight gain, water retention and moodiness. 2. Too much estrogen given in supplementation therapy, too much estrogen can saturate the estrogen receptors appearing the same as too little estrogen and cause all the same symptoms 3. Other hormone imbalances including low thyroid, high insulin or low progesterone can mimic low estrogen and worse throw all the other receptors and target cells, feedback loops and tissue sensitivities out of balance. The key is to get your levels checked. Know your numbers! Keep stress low. Be aware of what can cause ‘stress’, and keep all your levels in balance! Balance is the Answer!
