69 years ago today, my uncle got behind the wheel of a dukw amphibious viechle. He drove off a landing craft onto sword beach under intense enemy fire and rough seas. Over the following days he fought his way through France, Belgium and on to Germany. After all that, he had to help bury bodies and burn buildings at Belson concentration camp. He was given 3 weeks off to recover, then went to Palestine on humanitarian duties for 6 months. Before he did any of that, he was fighting the Afrika korps in Libya.
