9/11/2013 - 11 am: Update on the potential severe weather for this afternoon into this evening across northern Maine & western New Brunswick - The first area of shower and thunderstorm activity has moved out of northern Maine and analysis indicates that the warm front seems to have moved north of Caribou and Presque Isle but remains south of Saint John Valley. This has resulted in skies remaining cloudy with areas of fog across northern Aroostook County with sunny skies now being observed across central and southern Aroostook County. This appearance of the sun has caused temperatures to rise into the upper 60s to near 70 Degrees in Caribou and Presque Isle and around 70 Degrees in Houlton with humid conditions. Thunderstorms are expected to develop between 1 and 3 pm this afternoon across northern and central Aroostook County and a little later this afternoon, between 2 and 5 pm across southern Aroostook County. Some of these thunderstorms are expected to be severe with damaging wind gusts to 60 to 70 mph, quarter to golf ball size hail and the outside chance of a tornado. Additionally, frequent cloud to ground lightning and localized flash flooding will be a threat as well. These strong to severe thunderstorms will then continue right into this evening before coming to an end around midnight. The area across northern Maine that has the highest risk of seeing severe thunderstorms this afternoon into this evening will be from Caribou and Presque Isle and points south through all of southern Aroostook County, including the Houlton area. Further north across the Saint John Valley, the atmosphere may be a little more stable, however, severe thunderstorms are still a possibility. Keep checking back for later updates on this potential severe weather situation for this afternoon into this evening.
