A Masterpiece of Mochica workmanship. This flawless wooden scepter was probably made for a great warrior for his accomplishments. Such a person was worthy of respect. The intricacy of the carving shows a high ranked person holding a large club. Inlaid adornments of Red Spondylus for bracelets, belt, eyes and other areas. The Necur (mother of pearl) is being used for his necklace and green stones are being used for all pupils (warrior, jaguar and snakes). There are many indications showing the importance of this staff. The Red spondylus princeps was the highest valued commodity and thought to be the very food for the gods. The feline atop of his head shows his respects for the powerful Jaguar. The detailing in the feline is also incredible. Eyes, teeth, genitalia and curled tail are wonderful. Eyes are also made of spondylus and green stone pupils. He is also being safely gaurded from his back as the two serpents keep their watch. Beautiful overall patina is present in areas were one would expect. Choice Condition Northern Peru. Mochica/Moche 100-800AD. Measures over 12" with stand 15” A very important and an extraordinary piece of history. galeriacontici.net
