A general theme has formed which basically is positing that the Manassas City Council is short-changing our school system. Lots of bad information is out there. Heres the truth: 1. City of Manassas provides 48.5% of school funding. Thats a higher percentage than PWC (45.2%) and Manassas Park (32.2%). -Source: 2014 WABE Guide, pg.25 2. The standardized cost per pupil in MCPS is $11,984 as compared to $10,173 in Manassas Park and $10,158 in PWC. I say standardized because these figures are adjusted to account for each localities way of dealing with debt service. The current funding scheme for our schools yields over 12 million additional dollars for the MCPS system than it would receive if it were subject to the funding formulas in PWC or Manassas Park. - Source: 2014 WABE guide, pg. 31 3. 48.3% of the Citys general fund goes to our schools. This is the 3rd most generous allocation in the 10 school districts of northern Virginia. More generous than: Alexandria City, Arlington County, Fairfax County, Loudoun County, Manassas Park, Prince Georges County and Prince William County. -Source: 2014 WABE guide, pg. 27 4. The average MCPS teacher makes $63,228, higher than in Manassas Park ($57,993) and Prince William County ($60,408). Only 3 NOVA school districts have higher average teacher salaries. -Source: 2014 WABE guide, pg. 11,12,15. We can debate forever if funding for our schools are sufficient, but I do not think one could debate that the Manassas City Council has drastically under-funded our schools.
