A mother-daughter conversation this morning... I feel confident about the future and heres why: the circumcisers will shake in their boots when they meet the next generation of mothers if even half of them are like my Anna, age 5. Annas baby brother is intact (of course) and she likes helping with diaper changes, so she knows all about what a penis is, what its supposed to look like, etc. I was reading a post about circumcision aloud earlier today and she asked, what does circumcision mean? I told her there are a few people in the world, mostly in our country, who think a normal penis like Bubbys is dirty and gross, so they have doctors cut the skin on the end of it off just after theyre born. There are more people who do NOT have this done than there are people who do, but the people who do like to say really loudly that their way is the best way. She looked really horrified for a moment and said, wait, they cut off a piece of a tiny babys penis? Bubbys penis isnt gross or dirty! Its kinda funny, but it isnt gross! I agreed, giggling (from the mouths of babes.) Then she said, does it hurt them? And I said, the people who have it done will say no, because the doctors lie to them and say it doesnt, and they figure the baby wont remember it anyway. Now she looks REALLY horrified and says, there are DOCTORS who LIE to mommies and then HURT their babies?? Those poor babies! Nobodys ever going to cut or hurt MY baby!
