A perfect day for picking the first brambles of the season. What a - TopicsExpress

A perfect day for picking the first brambles of the season. What a pity our friends Mark, Sam and Ben left this morning! Its almost a physical shock to look up from the bramble bushes on the lane I chose and see Goatfell at one end of the lane and Holy Isle at the other. Its also funny to see Beppes respnse to the first Bramble Expotition of the season. At first hes bored and wondering why we keep stopping, so that I can bend down in the undergrowth and then straighten up with a groan. Then a light goes on in his eyes and remembers last year. From then on you have to avoid the low-hanging branches because they are already covered in Dalmation dribble. Hes not as adept as Puccini was, forgetting to curl back his lips occasionally and yelping as he gets prickled. At one point my Co Op bag burst and spilled a couple of pounds of brambles on the path, which he hoovered up with gusto. From then on I had to utilise one of his poo bags. On the way back I met some walkers and was sorely tempted to echo Les Humphries trick with the airline sickbag and the vegetable soup, except that I would probably have dipped into the wrong bag! Anyway, dont let that put you off tonights bramble trio: a wee bramble cobbler (from a book of vintage recipes), an apple and bramble semifreddo (bang up to date from the BBC) and a minted bramble Eton Mess (well, why wouldnt you?) Pictures (hopefully) to follow.
