A visit to Hiroshima is expected to be a somber place, a place of quiet reflection and prayers. And it was. Therefore I did not expect the 3 joyful surprises that came my way yesterday: 1) when waiting for a seat at the Okinomiyaki restaurant a man asked NORSK?! and he turned out to be Swedish, with an Iranian Swedish friend, afterwhich we had a chat in the respective languages, joking and laughing. (photo 1). Walking around on my own in the Peace Park a small family approached me and asked me to do a survey for their sons homework. Dont you know it had to do with SMILING! Questions: where do you come from, what do you say to get people to smile when taking their photo, and can they take my photo smiling! I then asked to reciprocate by taking theirs (photo 2). On the shinkansen bullet train back to Kyoto I made a little friend when I showed her what I was knitting, then finger-crocheted her a little bracelet. We were on the train for a while and by the end she had made me two drawings of a woman in kimono, Japanese flag, and herself and gave them to me. I gave her my spinning card with name/address and a little drawing of knitting and a cap. In the photo she has on the little bracelet, minus the bow I made as she had tugged and played alot with the yarn. We bowed to each other while sitting, and when getting off her family thanked me. (photos 3 and 4).
