ACTION ALERT!!! PLEASE COMMENT ASAP! Here is the problem: We have a terrible situation in NY. In sum, the State Dept of Education is proposing to create a new category of students with disabilities – one that is not defined in state or federal law - and allowing districts to give them something called “out of level tests” – that means easier tests so that they will score better. So, a district could decide to give a 6th grade student, the 4th grade test and then if they score proficient they could use that 4th grade score toward their districts outcomes. Additionally, as you may remember, not one state or the federal govt could ever define this category of students – it is very likely to include lots of kids with learning disabilities and it shouldn’t. It shouldn’t exist. This will hurt kids. It is just like the 2% issue we have been fighting. It could take kids off diploma track, it denies them access to the general education curriculum that is appropriate for them and it permanently keeps them behind. We have 1 week – next week - to send in public comments. We need parents in NY to speak out against this. The Board of Regents will be deciding next week after public comment. HERE is the link to the comment page. p12.nysed.gov/accountability/ESEAFlexibilityRenewal.html
