AND COMPAORE ENDS IN A DISGRACE This guy was the President of Burkina Faso for 27 YEARS until some hours ago. The 63-year-old autocratic Blaise Compaoré became the President when he organized a coup that killed his best friend and former president and that great African hero named Thomas Sankara. Blaise Compaoré made attempts to extend his term beyond 2015 and go for a fifth term. The parliament (which is actually made up of his cronies) was discussing extending his tenure when the people of Burkina Faso felt they have had enough. Tens of thousands of them poured onto the streets and took the protests right to the capital of the country, Ouagadougou. There were also spontaneous protests in other major cities like Bobo Dioulasso and Ouahigouya. The angry protesters took over the parliament and set it on fire. Like all dictators, Compaore fled the nation and he is now in Dakar, Senegal. Such a disgraceful exit for one of Africas strongmen who felt he would rule for ever. But is this the first time the people of Burkina Faso would revolt against this handsome tyrant? No! On the 14th of April, 2011, Compaore ran from his hometown, Ziniare after military bodyguards started a revolt in their barracks over unpaid allowances. The protests spread to the presidential palace and other army bases with gunfire reported inside the presidential compound. Before he ran to Senegal, he dissolved the government and declared a state of emergency. Army chief General Honoré Nabéré Traoré has announced that a transitional government would be in charge of the nation until elections are held within one year. Compaore is still making senseless attempts to hold on to power but it is obvious he CANNOT survive this any more unless he wants to plunge the country into a civil war. The problem with many African leaders is that they do not know exactly when to stop and step down with honour, that explains why many of them keep pushing stubbornly until they have very disgraceful endings in office and then go on exile. From Mobutu to Compaore to Habre to Mengistu to Idi Amin, they take their people for fools and never learn from history. I will not say more than that.
