ANDREW FERGUSON WINS AT SKYLINE, BUTCH GREEN IS CHAMPION -Chris Fleming earns IMCA Modified Championship with feature win Andrew Ferguson drove to his first career Skyline Raceway feature win last Saturday night as the 2013 championships were decided. Butch Green’s third place finish earned him the 2013 track championship. Chris Fleming won the IMCA Modified feature, giving him just enough points to earn the track championship by a single point over Kevan Cook. Brenton Miller drove to victory in the Pure Stock feature while Cody Brown topped the Junkyard Dogs to earn his first win of 2013. Defending track champion Phil Burns won his first Junkyard Pups feature of the season. The 25 lap Sportsman feature came to the green flag with Mark Weaver and Jim LaRock pacing the field. Weaver jumped out to the lead early with LaRock in hot pursuit. Behind the two leaders, eventual winner Andrew Ferguson was on the move as he advanced to third behind the race leaders. LaRock would slip past Weaver as would Ferguson a couple of laps later. With the 25 lap feature event running off without a caution flag, the battle at the head of the field continued with LaRock running the inside groove with Ferguson working the top side of the speedway. Lap after lap, Ferguson was able to gain ground on LaRock, eventually utilizing the momentum of the outside groove to take over the race lead after several laps of side by side racing. Once out front, Ferguson would lead the remainder of the event to score his first Skyline feature win. LaRock hung on to finish second while Butch Green clinched the 2013 Sportsman championship with a third place finish. Ryan Jordan and John Morse completed the top five finishers. The IMCA Modified track championship was on the line as well as Chris Fleming and Kevan Cook came into the evening tied in points, meaning that whichever driver finished better in the feature would earn the track championship. A flat tire in his heat race fut Fleming at the rear of the field for the start of the feature. The early stages of the feature saw Cook make a big move to the race lead as Fleming was slashing his way through traffic to drive his way into contention. Over the closing laps of the event, Cook was still leading, but Fleming was closing fast as a deflating right rear tire was causing the handling to go away on Cook’s car. Fleming was able to take advantage of Cook’s misfortune as he was able to drive past and into the race lead with just two laps remaining. Fleming would go on to score the win and the championship by a single point over second finishing Cook. Mike Stoddard finished third ahead of Craig Ward and Glen Erwin, who was making his first appearance of 2013. Brenton Miller capitalized on a front row starting position to lead all 20 laps of the Pure Stock feature to pick up a win aboard the Boynton Motorsports #3L. Miller held off a determined challenge from Earl Zimmer, whose second place finish earned him the 2013 season championship. Darryl Krebs finished third with a late arriving John Cooper Jr. finishing fourth. Dan Searls picked up the ride in Domenic Fuller’s #12D and came home with a fifth place finish. Cody Brown picked up the ride in the Buck Mills Sr. #15 Junkyard Dog fir the evening, and Cody made the most of the opportunity as he drove to victory in the 15 lap feature event. John Palfrey finished second ahead of Connor VanValkenburg, Joe Gorsline, and Lucas Mills. Buck Mills Jr. had already clinched the 2013 championship and turned his car over to his brother Lucas for the evening. Phil Burns drove to his first victory of 2013 in the Junkyard Pups feature event. Isaiah Forward finished second, clinching the 2013 championship. Nick Seiter finished third ahead of John Wood and newcomer Colin Davey. Samantha Mills bested her sister in law Amanda Mills to pick up the win in the Powder Puff race. . Next Saturday night it will be a big five division racing card at Skyline with a full show of racing action including the Sportsman, IMCA Modifieds, Street Stocks, Junkyard Dogs, and Junkyard Pups.
