ARE you ready for the best, strangest and most fun race of the year? The Anything that Floats race, 800m along the Kowie River from the Port Alfred Ski-boat Club to Barmuda, is taking place this Saturday, and the supporters should be out in droves, accumulating along the river banks to watch as wannabe sailors take to the water. Teams of no more than six must assemble a vessel capable of covering the distance, which must not include a hull from an existing craft or any form of motor. Previous events have seen everything from makeshift pirate ships, inflatable animals, inner tubes and even concrete and polystyrene rafts, take to the water, many of which failed to even cross the starting line. Tip number 1 – TEST your craft to establish that it actually floats BEFORE the race. Also in previous years, many competitors have apparently lost their way along the course. Tip number 2 – If you need to, wear glasses. The craft will virtually float down the ‘straight as a die’ course under its own momentum, providing you are pointing in the right direction when you start. Some competitors have spent an inordinate amount of time sprucing up their hair and makeup (surprisingly, not just the girls) before the race. Tip number 3 – You are going to get wet. Get over it. The NSRI (the beneficiaries of the event) are at hand to save you if necessary. They don’t want to see you perish, you are earning money for them, so DON’T PANIC (apologies to Douglas Adams). The event should be as much of a blast as it has been in previous years, and a lot of teams are currently in the final stages of constructing their vessels. For everyone’s entertainment, Ntombi confirmed they will play at Barmuda. Judges for the event will be Ward 10 councillor Ross Purdon, Sunshine Coast Tourism manager Sandy Birch and municipal environmental officer Willem Nel. Rotarian Fred Tyson will be the MC for the day and keep everyone informed of the progress of the race. Programme 11.30am – Registration of the participants 12.30pm – Official start of the event including safety speech by the NSRI 1.00pm – Race begins 3.00pm – Race ends 3.15pm - Prize giving ceremony with the Master of Ceremony and the judges 3.45pm - Start of the after-party and the volleyball matches Stenden South Africa, the organisers of the event would like to thank the following sponsors for their support: Curves, Fish River Sun, Franks on the Wharf, Woodbine Nursery, Wimpy, Russian Bear, Oasis, Leach Pharmacy, Homebase, Charisma A, Sports n all, Tahoe Spur and Pick n Pay.
