Aboriginal Skies features more astronomical art by artist Megan Porter. Here are some of Megans details. My name is Megan Porter, I am Gomeroi (Kamilaroi) and was born in Narrabri NSW. I have lived most of my life in Tamworth NSW. I produce most of my work with acrylic paints on canvas or ochre on eggs. My work fuses layered, colourful backgrounds with bold patterns and contemporary colour schemes. I make extensive use of both lines and dots, as well as the geometric patterns that are sacred to Gomeroi (Kamilaroi) art and culture. My paintings typically depict native fauna and traditional stories. In particular, I am influenced by Gomeroi (Kamilaroi) lore and perspective on a number of topics ranging from spirituality to astronomy. Through my art, I hope to continue these traditions through time and develop further in technique, personal style and expression. I did much research at the UNE library trying to find Gomeroi (Kamilaroi) stories related to astronomy. I got much information from Katie Langloh Parker, Ridley, ORourke, Mathews and Giacon. The Southern Cross story I got from the Coonabarabran Observatory. This one [painting below] is the Southern Cross and when death first came to the world. It is the 2 cockatoos [alpha & beta centauri] looking for their tree to land in. (Image source: Megan Porter).
