After last night’s meeting between the governors from the new PDP faction and the presidency, a cease-fire was declared and they reportedly agreed to sheathe their swords even though they did not come to any agreement. The Niger governor, Babangida Aliyu, who addressed the press after the meting said, “The meetings were cordial and deliberations fruitful with a clear commitment on all sides to resolve all issues raised at the meetings. The meetings also called on all parties to shield their swords and avoid further inflammatory comments on issues particularly during the course of our deliberations as we have all agreed to resolve all the differences. In the interim, all parties have accepted to commence immediate action and agreed towards the complete resolution of all matters and will continue to meet until all processes toward reconciliation are totally complete.” That was last night. Today, the PDP chairman, Bamanga Tukur, received Mohammed Abacha, the son of former dictator Sani Abacha. Abacha said he has chosen to decamp from the CPC (now APC) to the ruling PDP because the party practised true internal democracy. After that meeting, the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) dissolved the executive committee of the Kano State chapter of the party and constituted a caretaker committee to run its affairs.
