Agnes Goes Atmospheric to Celebrate Her 125th Anniversary “Flat Agnes” reaches the stratosphere aboard a weather balloon To celebrate Agnes Scott College’s 125th anniversary, faculty and students recently launched “Flat Agnes” into the stratosphere aboard a weather balloon. Professor of Astronomy Amy Lovell ’90, Assistant Professor of Physics Nicole Ackerman, and a group of students launched the weather balloon from south Georgia that traveled more than 92,000 feet into the stratosphere. At that level, “Flat Agnes” was able to see the curvature of the earth and the black sky. The balloon was outfitted with two cameras (one of which for Agnes) and scientific instruments to measure pressure, temperature, altitude and acceleration. Check out the video!
