Ahh, Scotland. Big day for our friends north of the border. Ive only ever been there a handful of times, the most recent about four years ago when Duran played Edinburgh Castle. I stayed with a pal in Perth for a few days before, a gorgeous town and I was treated with a trip to Dunkeld which to this day is one of the most beautiful and idyllic places Ive ever been to. As it happens most of my Scottish pals dont actually live there anymore so cant vote today but interestingly all of them are pro independence, perhaps fired up by a romantic notion of independence for their home country. And I dont live in the United Kingdom either so probably shouldnt offer my view but Im going to anyway. The people of Scotland have clearly felt disenfranchised politically as a member of the UK, the feeling that increasingly their vote, traditionally left leaning, isnt having an impact on an increasingly right leaning Westminster. As tax payers, I can see how that would be very frustrating. I think perhaps the time is right for them to go it alone, I think if the chance isnt taken now there will be deep regret for years and bluntly I dont buy into the scare mongering offered by the no campaign. Ill be sad of course but hopeful that actually as somebody who is myself left leaning politically that Scotland can inspire the rest of us by example. I dont think itll be easy, I expect some pain ahead and they cant walk away from the shared debt but I think an independent Scotland will ultimately be the right thing for them and for England. Its a big day, good luck.
