Am I the only one to notice from the Keating program that his defining intellectual inspiration - his Damascene moment - was the realisation that for a brief period after the French Revolution there was Arcadia? For a moment my interest was piqued. Would he launch into a tirade against the Ancien Régime? Would he argue the case for the Jacobins or reveal a hitherto unspoken passion for the historical writings of George Rudé? Then, of course, he revealed that it was all about how they made really good clocks.
