An excellent Letter to the Editor in the Knoxville News Sentinel, Dec. 7, 2014: The University of Tennessee football team ended the season tied for ninth place out of 14 conference teams, ahead of only Arkansas and perennial cellar dwellers Kentucky and Vanderbilt. The 2014-2015 mens basketball team may finish even lower with NCAA sanctions on the horizon as a result of coach Donnie Tyndalls possible violations at Southern Mississippi. In this atmosphere it would seem that UT Athletic Director Dave Hart would have much more pressing concerns than eliminating the logo of the one group of Tennessee athletes that have competed successfully in the Southeastern Conference — the Lady Vols. The Lady Vols softball team has reached the college World Series six times in the last nine years, finishing third three times and runner-up twice. It has been forever since the mens baseball team has won enough games even to participate in the SEC baseball tournament playoff, although 10 teams are allowed to participate each year. Everyone nationwide knows of the success of the Lady Vols basketball team. Based on the comparative success of the mens and womens teams at UT, if Hart insists that all teams participate under one logo, perhaps it should be the Lady Vols logo and not the Power T. While I did not agree with UTs decision to consolidate the mens and womens athletic departments, I realize that was the trend at the time. The grave mistake that UT made was not selecting Joan Cronan as athletic director instead of Hart. UT will never have a successful mens sports program as long as Hart is allowed to remain as athletic director. - William L. Waters, Knoxville
