An organist in another group posted that she almost got locked in the church last night and a discussion of fire laws, etc., ensued. I was reminded of a time when those fire laws came in very handy a few years ago. I was a long term sub at a Presbyterian church where a pastor and his wife (the organist) had taken an extended leave of absence to work overseas. In their absence, the secretary and her husband ( a defrocked pastor) took advantage of the situation to insert their sons garage band into the services. This church was small but had excellent choirs, instrumentalists and bells and had not been open to drums and electric guitars. There was a great deal of tension was occuring at all meetings, but the very bold secretary was altering minutes and creating the bulletin her way. The rock group took to setting up for all services by the exit door near the sacristy. They completely blocked the exit and the side of the chancel area and the communion steps. Every Sunday it was a mess. (Thanks to the great organ, though, I was louder than even their amplifiers and I frequently changed keys when they thought they could play along.) The elders demanded that the exit door be unlocked. The elders got even more creative and somehow the fire alarm started getting pulled during the worship music at each service, causing the elders and ushers to have to push drums and stuff out of the way so people could escape through the fire exit. For a bunch of old people, this congregation could really exit a building!
