An unnamed friend from Portland sent me this workshop description. You never knew your deodorant was a tool of colonial repression. NOW YOU KNOW! You can make your own deodorant out of placental sac remnants, non-GMO daydreams, a crustys wormy dreadlock, and the scrapings of a guilt-induced stomach ulcer. How have colonial privileges sustained themselves and how do people who value sustainability draw upon colonial legacies in their work? We’ll explore the relationships between social identities, personal action, and systems of oppression by focusing on one particular type of relationship to dirt - more specifically, masking the ‘stank’ produced by the microorganisms who inhabit our armpits. Participants in this very participatory workshop will walk away with an understanding of some of the history of hygiene, a lens through which they can analyze how whiteness flows through sustainability work, and a little bit of homemade deodorant.
