As I now move into my week of preparation prior to attending the Conscious Elder East Coast Gathering . I found myself in the most amazing spaces last night. Many of my friends all vibrant 60 something women have difficulty adopting the mantle elder, I did not because I live and am active in my city but the conscious part is a work in progress for sure. Yes I am an environmental activist , quietly in my way, getting things done on the sidelines, but to embrace and move into the space of those that have left this earth and who many admired, that is a hefty challenge indeed. Holly was wonderful last night telling us all to tell our stories in poem, writings and music and in our daily actions in small local ways . So I felt lifted ,as that I practice already but now I am ready to state my purpose : I am a Healer and working to be fully conscious of my world in every moment. I still find the youth confusing and pledge to move forward with an open heart and a willingness to listen . We all must , be willing to see more clearly and be more wise. So leaving this wonderful peaceful evening of folk songs, stories of protest commitment and valor (Odetta,Pete Seger,Arlo Guthrie and Holly were all present in voice) I moved on to listen to 2 bands whose drummer I have known since he (age 25) rocked the drum line in high school. I danced the night away and hugged and said HI to a number of 20 somethings, hoping that they saw an elder who was able to let her freak flag fly allowing them open their hearts to other elders in their lives, hopefully opening and understanding that elder is not old, and that being inspired by music is nothing new. My intention for the night was to honor the musicians I knew, visit and dance with their parents and hold a vessel of love for the generation to come that will save our world because as I heard last night and will repeat....No Earth-No Party I Am Willing - Holly Near - 2006 I am open and I am willing For to be hopeless would seem so strange It dishonors those who go before us So lift me up to the light of change There is hurting in my family There is sorrow in my town There is panic all across the nation There is wailing the whole world round May the children see more clearly May the elders be more wise May the winds of change caress us Even though it burns our eyes Give me a mighty oak to hold my confusion Give me a desert to hold my fears Give me a sunset to hold my wonder Give me an ocean to hold my tears. youtu.be/dge7f1Ne4Ng
