Aug 02, 2013 at 2:59pm Tamale NPP detainees file defense application. For the first time since their detention on February 17 2009, the five NPP youth activists in Tamale have been given the opportunity to open their defense. Counsel for the accused persons, Lawyer Nana Obiri Boahene and Lawyer Mohammed Shaibu Abdulai (Raw) opened the defense. Supervising High Court Judge of Tamale, Justice Lawrence L. Mensah however earlier dismissed an application of no case filed by the Counsel. The case has been adjourned until Tuesday 6 August 2013. The accused persons comprising Yahuza Yakubu, Abibu Dagbana, Majeed Alhassan, Alhassan Sayibu and Imoro Gundaana were arrested in Tamale following a political clash between NPP and NDC youth in front of Tamale Central Market butchers house on February 17, 2009. Rashid Alhassan, NDC youth activist died during the said clash in 2009 which resulted in the burning of 27 houses, vehicles, motorbikes and other valuables in Gumbihini, Choggu and other surrounding communities in the Tamale metropolis. Counsel for the accused persons, Lawyer Alhaji Mohammed Shaibu Abdulai told Citi News his Clients will soon regain their freedom. Yahuza Yakubu, Abibu Dagbana, Majeed Alhassan, Alhassan Sayibu and Imoro Gundaana have since 2009 transferred to the Navrongo and Kumasi Prisons but are currently in the Tamale Prisons.
