Preparation of musicians They say if you don’t know the value of a thing you will miss use it… STAGE THREE BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE OF MUSIC MINISTRY 1. PLACE OR POSITION OF MUSIC ACCORDING TO SCRIPTURES References to both vocal and instrumental music abound in the Bible from beginning to end, in association with true worship and otherwise (Genesis 4:21, 31; 27, 1 Chronicles 25:1, Revelation 18:22). Music is perhaps the most ancient of the fine arts. Jubal, who lived before the flood, was the father of those who played on the harp and the organ, Ge 4:21; 31:26-27. In patriarchal times music seems to have been an essential part of life, Judging from Laban’s desire to give Jacob and his own daughters a musical welfare (Genesis 31:27). The prophets, priests, kings and the nation of Israel expressed themselves thru music Moses, having passed through the Red Sea, composed a song, and sung it with the Israelitish men, while Miriam, his sister, sung it with dancing, and playing on instruments, at the head of the women, Ex 15:20-21. He caused silver trumpets to be made to be sounded at solemn sacrifices, and on religious festivals. David, who had great skill in music, soothed the troubled spirit of Saul by playing on the harp, 1Sa 16:16, 23; and when he was himself established on the throne - seeing that the Levites were not employed, as formerly, in carrying the boards, veils, and vessels of the tabernacle, its abode being fixed at Jerusalem - appointed a great part of them to sing and to play on instruments in the temple, 1Ch 25:1-31. David brought the ark to Jerusalem with triumphant and joyful music, 1Ch 13:8; 15:16-28; and in the same manner Solomon was proclaimed king, 1Ki 1:39-40. The Old Testament prophets also sought the aid of music in their services, 1Sa 10:5; 2Ki 3:15. BUT NOW BRING ME A MUSICIAN.” THEN IT HAPPENED, WHEN THE MUSICIAN PLAYED, THAT THE HAND OF THE LORD CAME UPON HIM. • The period of Samuel, David, and Solomon was the golden age of Hebrew music, As it was of Hebrew poetry. Music was now for the first time systematically cultivated. It was an essential part of training in the schools of the prophets (1Sa 10:5; 19:19-24; 2Ki 3:15; 1Ch 25:6). • There now arose also a class of professional singers (2Sa 19:35; Ec 2:8). The temple, however, was the great school of music. In the conducting of its services large bands of trained singers and players on instruments were constantly employed (2Sa 6:5; 1Ch 15:1-29; 16:1-43; 23:5; 25:1-6). • In the later years of David’s life, Jehovah through His prophets Nathan and Gad directed the establishment of the music organization for the sanctuary (1 Chronicles 23:1-5, 2 Chronicles 29:25-26). The music organization begun by David was fully realized at Solomon’s temple. The grandeur and magnitude of the music at the dedication of the temple can be appreciated from the fact that the trumpeters alone numbered 120 (2 chronicles 5:12-13). In conjunction with the preparations of Jehovah’s temple, David set aside 4000 Levites for musical service (1 Chronicles 23:4-5). Of these 288 were “trained in song to Jehovah, all experts” (1 Chronicles 25:7). The whole arrangement was under the direction of three accomplished musicians, Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun (apparently also named Ethan). • But as the nation grew lax/careless in its faithfulness to Jehovah all features of true worship suffered, including the music. However when Kings Hezekiah and Josiah instituted their reforms as well as when the Jews returned from Babylonian exile efforts were made to reestablish the arrangement of music that Jehovah had indicated He desired (2 chronicles 29: 25-29, 35:15, Ezra 3:10). Later when Nehemiah inaugurated the wall of Jerusalem the Levite with full instrumental accompaniment contributed greatly to the joy of the occasion (Nehemiah 12:27-42). it is in this regard that i fully advocate for full time PAID musicians. • From the New Testament perspective; In Colossians 3:12-17, God gives a model for corporate worship at a church, including an instruction to sing: Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
