BIRTHDAY WISHES: Carter Beauford was born on November 2, 1957 in Charlottesville, Virginia. Carter Beauford is a founding member of The Dave Matthews Band and is known for his uncanny ambidextrous and open hand drumming style. For Carter Beauford, it all started when he was three years old. His father was going to a Buddy Rich concert, but couldnt find a babysitter for young Carter. His only solution was to take Carter with him. From the moment Carter laid eyes and ears upon Buddy Rich, he was enthralled and fascinated with the drums. After the concert, Carter took up drums and wanted to emulate Buddy Rich. Upon hearing his sons playing, Carters father was so impressed, he bought him a Roy Rogers drum kit made with paper heads and tin shells. This was all Carter needed to get his drumming career started. During his early formative years, Carters major influences were Tony Williams, Papa Jo Jones, and of course, Buddy Rich. Throughout his career, Carter has played with many different bands with various musical styles. Carter feels it is important to have an open mind musically and to expose oneself to different genres of music. One band, besides the Dave Matthews Band, that Carter is very proud of was called Secrets. This jazz fusion band played the Richmond, Virginia, area and was composed of many talented musicians including Carter on drums and future DMB bandmate LeRoi Moore on saxophone. After this band dissolved, Carter went to California to audition for The Arsenio Hall Show but failed to get the gig. He then moved back to Virginia which is where the next chapter of his life started - The Dave Matthews Band. The Dave Matthews Band formed in early 1991 when vocalist/guitarist Dave Matthews decided to put some songs he had written on tape. Instead of simply recording himself with a guitar, he opted to bring in some instrumental help to give his musical ideas more depth. Since then, they have sold over 30 million records worldwide and are only the group to have six consecutive studio albums debut at number one on the Billboard 200. Unpredictable and always fresh in his approach to drumming, Carter is a unique and highly creative drummer. Earlier this year, he was voted one of The 50 Greatest Drummers of All Time by the readers of Modern Drummer Magazine. A joy to watch and listen to!
