Baz Bamigboyes Article: Michael Ball, who has signed a contract to star in the musical Mack And Mabel, written by Jerry Herman and Michael Stewart. It will open next summer at the Chichester Festival Theatre, which has had a terrific season this year, including Jonathan Kent’s incomparable production of Gypsy with Imelda Staunton as Momma Rose and Lara Pulver as Gypsy Rose Lee. Director Jonathan Church and choreographer Stephen Mear are looking for the right actress to play Mabel. The show’s a love story, of sorts, about the complicated relationship between silent film era, Keystone Cops director Mack Sennett and actress Mabel Normand, one of Sennett’s Bathing Beauties. They had a rocky relationship. He drank and she (who had demons of her own) endured his beatings. Stewart’s ‘book’ has always been problematic but I gather Church and Ball have insisted it be revised. The last musical Ball did was Sweeney Todd, also at Chichester, with Ms Staunton. Can’t wait to hear him sing Herman’s melodic songs.
