Being a Christian is a relationship that goes beyond being a child of God. It is to love Jesus as his servant, student, sibling, friend, and spouse. His words, If you love me, you will keep my commandments” call us to realize that by loving on him with our lives we are keeping his commandments. There are no exact rules for that love, but Jesus does give us broad guidelines like those in the verses just before today’s reading. There we are called to follow the example of our Lord who served the lowest by recognizing that we can never see ourselves as above any kind of service to any kind of person or need (13:12-16). There we are called to be known to all by our willingness to share the love we experience in Jesus with each other; an intimate, endless, and unconditional love lived toward other Christians that is more concerned with God than the person (13:34-35).
