Being in Jamaica right now is awesome not just because its an amazing place, but also because I get to see an outside perspective on whats happening in the United States. People in the US need to be aware that the world is absolutely watching the events in Ferguson, and the reviews are not positive. A country revered for its tolerance, enlightenment, and overall greatness is now seen using tactless force in their attempts to contain the protests in Ferguson. Unable to (and possibly unwilling to) pacify and separate the few who mar a largely peaceful protest with looting and destruction, law enforcement officials have instead used tear gas, smoke bombs, and stun grenades to injure large crowds of innocent people attempting to exercise their 1st amendment rights. Here in Jamaica law enforcement are also under scrutiny for their brutal tactics and a large push within both the government and the society at large is being made for reform. This movement has had such an impact that body cameras for police officers are supposed to be introduced soon (both to increase safety for police and to decrease brutality against the public). The reaction by law enforcement officials here in Jamaica regarding the events in Ferguson is utter confusion. America, which is supposed to be an example for developing countries like Jamaica, seems to instead be moving backwards. As Americans, we have always prided ourselves on being the leader / the example for countries around the world. And yes, often, we have been. But if we want to maintain that status as a global leader we need to collectively take a look at all of our actions (both domestically and abroad) and ask ourselves if were still holding ourselves to a higher standard. When I look at how were handling the protests in Ferguson as well as the overall state of our government and our nation, I dont know if I can confidently say yes anymore. I desperately want America to continue to be the example. I want us to continue to be a shining light within the world. And I think the rest of the world wants us to be that too.
