Blue Jays mid-season report: 45-36, 1st place in the AL East, 2 - TopicsExpress

Blue Jays mid-season report: 45-36, 1st place in the AL East, 2 games ahead of the division. After a slow start, a phenomenal month of May, and some offensive scuffling in June, they find themselves in an unfamiliar position after 81 games: at the top. The team was explosive offensively in the first half, with much better than expected starting pitching, decent defense and an improved bench over last year, enough to mostly overcome a shaky bullpen. They probably still need another starter and maybe another bullpen arm, and could really use a front line middle infielder, especially with Lawrie and Bautista out (no doubt things are in motion on the trade front), and the second half of the season features a very difficult schedule, but at the moment theyre on pace for a 90-win season, and the rest of the division is the weakest its been in years. I think theyll probably need more like 94-95 wins to make the postseason, so theyll have to step things up a bit in the second half to reach that goal, but Im excited to see how things go. Nothing is guaranteed in this game but the Jays havent been in first place at the half-way point in a very long time, and Ive really been enjoying this season so far.
