Born this day in 19somethingtheother, she hails to us from Pocahontas, Illinois, her life has been the story of a country song. Raised by her single teenage mom, she dropped out of school at 16 to work---she started out waiting tables and cooking at a roadside sit n choke, then moved on to singing in smoke filled bars with a band she had put together in the area of St. Louis, Missouri. Susie Osburn, a bar manager from Springfield, Missouri, went to St. Louis to find a new house band for her bar---she found eighteen-year-old Gretchen Frances Wilson singing Patsy Cline covers so well that Osburn initially thought the singing was coming from a jukebox. Recognizing Wilsons talent, Osburn immediately convinced her and her band, Sam-A-Lama, to move to Springfield and play at the Townhouse. Gretchen signed with Epic Records in 2003, debuting in 2004 onto the country music scene with Redneck Woman. Not forgetting where she came from, Gretchen is actively involved in several charities, including but not limited to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. You might be a Redneck Woman, but youre all woman---Happy Birthday Gretchen, I always think about you...... .
