Brighton Pride chooses theme for 2015 An ‘uplifting and empowering visual showcase’ 08 DECEMBER 2014 | BY TRIS REID-SMITH Britain’s favorite seaside LGBTI festival, Brighton Pride, has chosen its theme to celebrate its 25th anniversary. An expected 160,000 participants and spectators will be part of the Brighton Pride Community Parade in early August next year. And the theme will be Carnival of Diversity. Organizers hope those in the parade will be inspired to create a ‘creative, lively, uplifting and empowering visual showcase in the city’. The first gay pride in Brighton was in 1973 but it was not repeated until 1991, making that the first anniversary event and 2015 the 25th, says local historian Alf Le Flohic. Since then, it has grown to be the UK’s largest LGBTI park festival and the parade, where it all started in the 70s, is still at its heart. Pride director Dulcie Weaver said: ‘The Pride Community Parade perfectly reflects the diversity of the city as organizations, businesses and community groups come together. ‘It’s essential Pride continues to have campaigning message, so alongside the celebrations, Pride will continue to highlight the plight of LGBT communities across the globe that are criminalized and denied freedom.’ Groups are not yet able to apply to be part of the 2015 parade, but you can register your interest here.
