CONTENDING ISSUES AT THE ONGOING NATIONAL CONFERENCE: My Position. Resource Control: There are currently disparate agitation for resource control particularly from the south. My first question to these adocates is resource control for who? Those at forefront of this agitation are the elite, those in control of the apparatus of state coersion (Governors) and so called freedom fighters fighting for their private pockets. Nearly 60% of the trillions of naira that have accrued to the Niger Delta states since 1999 are stocked in private bank accounts of Governors and their political gladiators with no no evidence of development. These groups are at the forefront of crude oil bunering, oil theft and pipeline vandalisation. The problem of Niger Delta states is not lack of resources but corruption extra ordinary. Other spill over issues from the question of resource control is the approximation by the Ijaws as the true Niger Deltans. The war of ethic supremacy that will surge in the Niger Delta in the aftermath of resource control would be worse than what is currently prevalent in South Sudan. I can assure you South Sudan would have been better off in a United Sudan. To worsen the situation, there is a proliferation of arms in the Niger Delta sustained by politicians. The security situation will be unimaginable. Again, if we believe in one Nigeria, resource control is a recipe for disintegration. I therefore urge Niger Delta leaders, to be transparent, accountable and patriotic and then ask for increased allocation rather than resource control. Remember i am a full blown Niger Deltan.
