CU mulls marking overhaul MITA MUKHERJEE Calcutta University wants its colleges to examine Part I and Part II answer scripts of their own students from this year in a bid to speed up the publication of results. The scripts of all pass and honours subjects of the BA, BSc and BCom Part I exams and the pass papers of the Part II exams will have to be examined by the colleges in the proposed system. “We have decided to make the colleges responsible for evaluating the BCom Part I scripts of their students. The same system we want to implement for the assessment of the BA and BSc Part I honours and general and Part II general scripts,” vice-chancellor Suranjan Das said. The university has called a meeting with the principals of the 137 affiliated colleges on Thursday to discuss the proposed system. As of now, the colleges are only given the responsibility of examining the scripts of the 50-mark additional language paper (every student is required to study it in Part I) and the 50-mark environmental studies paper (compulsory in Part III). In the new system, the colleges will have to evaluate all these, plus the honours papers in the BA, BSc and BCom Part I and the pass papers in the Part II exams. The move to widen the ambit of the responsibility of the colleges has been made to avoid delays in the publication of the results, university officials said. “Exam dates are rescheduled for some reason or other almost every year. This year the exams were deferred twice because of the panchayat elections. In such a situation we need to evolve a system that can shorten the evaluation process,” said a source in the examination department. But principals of some colleges said academic standards might fall if the proposed scheme is implemented. “There is a risk of favouritism as examiners and examinees will be known to each other,” said a principal. In the current system, the university has a pool of examiners and scripts are distributed to them centrally. It is ensured that a teacher does not get answer scripts of the students of his/her college. “At times examiners send the marks late, resulting in delay in the publication of results. Such delays can be avoided in the new system,” said an official. Source: The Telegraph
