Can we urge the Party to adopt a policy that supports returning - TopicsExpress

Can we urge the Party to adopt a policy that supports returning the Parthenon Marbles to Greece as early as possible. It is a tragedy that the stolen Marbles are still not back where they belong, and the Greeks have now built a superb purpose built Museum very close to the Acropolis to house the entire collection. The Marbles were stolen by Elgin in cahoots with the local Ottoman leader (recalling that Greece was occupied at the time he had no legal right to sell them at all), and indeed after keeping a few years them at his own home Elgin only sold them on to the British Museum because of his financial difficulties and not at all out of any altruistic concern. Quite why the British Museum still argue that somehow we are the only ones best suited to housing the Marbles is baffling. No one would surely argue that the treasures stolen during WW2 by the Nazis shouldnt be returned, and yet when Elgin stole something its different...its perverse. We owe a huge debt to Greece (as Stephen Fry pointed out recently re Return of the Parthenon Marbles campaign) as in Democracy, Literature, Mathematics, Science etc etc, its now time to repay one more debt...the Marbles need to go home.
