Charitable grants raised from Olympians, managed by Olympians and given to Olympians.” Greetings fellow United States Olympian: For most Olympians, our participation in sport was never intended to be a lifetime career. We participated out of love for our sport, and the hope that we might represent our country with honor. For most of us, the honor of competing was reward enough. For most of us, our athleticism did not produce any long-term income, because, due to the amateur rules at the time, most of us were not allowed to earn a single penny from our sport. Happily, we did benefit from the training process as we developed life-skills like a good work ethic, teamwork, the ability to set clear goals, and the ability to overcome obstacles. For most of us, it is these skills that have allowed us to be successful in the post-athletic arena. Sadly, having participated in the Olympic Games does not make one immune from accident, illness or injury, and over the past 10-15 years, we have become more and more aware of the plight of some fellow Olympians, who, through no fault of their own, have suffered at the hands of bad fortune. The USOC has graciously agreed to match the OORF funds raised for Olympians, from Olympians, to a maximum of $50,000 this year. This generous offer is not necessarily going to be repeated, and so far we’ve raised around half that amount. The Board of the U.S. Olympians has asked me to send you this email, in the hope that you will be willing to make a small gift before the end of the calendar year. Please consider making a tax-deductible gift to the OORF. Please feel free to visit the Olympians for Olympians Relief Fund (OORF) website at: (oorf.org) Please mail your tax deductible gift to: Olympians for Olympians Relief Fund c/o Cindy Stinger, Treasurer 1 Olympic Plaza Colorado Springs, CO 80909 If you cannot make a gift, perhaps you can recommend to us, an Olympian who might be entitled to such a grant? If you know any Olympian who has recently encountered an illness, accident or injury, do them (and us) a favor and submit an application on their behalf. If we don’t look out for each other, who will? In the Olympic Spirit!
