Concerns about Common Core There has been some push-back against the implementation of Common Core by citizens throughout the country. Here are some oft-mentioned concerns. 1. Those who oppose Common Core say there is too much federal overreach – this new initiative takes away states’ power to set education goals. 2. Opponents assert that Common Core is essentially an experiment and no one knows if it will work. They follow-up by saying our educational system is too valuable for “an experiment.” 3. Some detractors believe Common Core limits teacher autonomy. 4. In general, the level of difficulty is stepped-up and some parents worry that the standards are not age-appropriate and will lead their children to experience anxiety and depression. Some worry that students who are already behind could be at a greater risk of failing. 5. Critics warn that students’ knowledge of core information in the basic subjects will suffer.
