Conservation scientists have discovered an early Whistler portrait - TopicsExpress

Conservation scientists have discovered an early Whistler portrait underneath a landscape. They expect to soon confirm that the portrait subject is Joanna Jo Hiffernan, who was also the subject of several works by Courbet. Its assumed that Whistler painted over the portrait most likely because he could not afford a new canvas! The earlier work was spotted due to the emergence of pentimenti, visible bumps from an overpainted image.
