Crime prevention pilot rolls out in Greater Manchester In the lead up to Christmas, residents in Salford and Trafford will receive free anti-property theft kits as part of an initiative to reduce burglary. The kits contain an anti-theft forensic traceable liquid that can be painted on property and leaves an indelible mark which glows yellow under UV light. Anything marked with this liquid can be linked back to its owner if stolen. Police officers and PCSOs will be visiting homes in targeted areas of Trafford and Salford with the kits which include stickers to warn potential thieves that they are using the system on their property. As well as helping police track stolen goods, it can also be deployed as a spray system to mark the skin and clothing of offenders in order to link them with a specific crime scene. Each custody suite in Trafford and Salford now has a UV light installed and all prisoners are scanned as they are taken into custody. The liquid is also detectable by UV torches which are now being used by police officers and scenes of crime officers. Superintendent Mark Kenny said: We welcome the Salford and Trafford pilots and hope the initiative helps to reduce crime in these areas. “We are working with local councils to roll out this project sending a very clear message to criminals that operate in these areas to beware. “Our officers will proactively use the forensic traceable liquid to track down stolen property to not only bring criminals to justice but to return property to its rightful owner if its stolen. “Along with increased patrols during the Christmas period this technology will aid police officers in keeping the streets of Greater Manchester safe.” There are a number of security measures you can take this winter to keep your home off a burglar’s radar. Timers can be set to switch lights on when it goes dark and you are out of the house, they can also be used to switch other electrical devices on including radios and set an alarm when leaving the house. Always lock doors and windows when you are in the house and don’t leave open windows and doors unattended during the winter months. Make sure your valuables are out of sight from windows and photograph jewellery and other expensive items and register them on immobilise, a free database which allows property to be traced back to its original owner should it be stolen. Homeowners should also consider investing in a safe which can be placed in a secure part of the home and bolted to the floor so it cannot be easily removed. Never leave spare keys hidden outside as burglars often know all the usual hiding places, wheelie bins can also be used as a climbing aid for burglars so try to secure them away from windows when they’re not in use. An effective way to reduce burglary is to work together with neighbours by setting up a Home Watch scheme.
