The visual practice knew a considerable shift in the last twenty years, mainly due to the emergence of new media technologies. Recurring to medial strategies is increasingly fundamental for visual artists (Bansky, Blu Blu), in order to make available new exhibition spaces and creative opportunities. At the same time, media webs like social networks, wearing technologies and opensource platforms ask the users – above all in political and ludic contexts (Persepolis 2.0, Selma & Sofiane Ouissi, Google Glass, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube) – to display a higher “artistic” expertise in order to implement these devices. We witness a real aesthetic turn at all levels of the media practice. On one side, this state of matter leads many theorists (Jenkins, Lovink, Rheingold, Shirky, Weinbgerger) to reconsider and develop Pierre Lévy’s idea that a new form of “collective intelligence” is emerging through new media: its implementation depends on peculiar perceptual, and more specifically aesthetic, reconfigurations of our life forms. On the other side, it becomes clear that images are not fixed on one single medium, but are transformed through processes of “remediation” and “premediation” (Belting, Bolter, Bredekamp, Grusin), or experimenting the “intermedial” and “interactive” impact of digital images (Antinucci, Casetti, Hagener, Lull, Montani, Spiegel, Stiegler, Stoltedijk). At this level, the artistic exploration of interactive and intermedial technologies points out to a new paradigm in the visual arts (Studio azzurro, Life in a Day, Italy in a Day). This issue of the Rivista di estetica aims to address such and similar questions, exploring and reflecting on the most advanced examples of intermedial and interactive elaboration of digital images, at the intersection of aesthetics, art history, semiotics, media studies and political theory.
