DAILY CELEBRATION OF CHRIST, Saturday, October 8, 2014 Gospel: Luke 16:9-15 Celebration of Christ: Jesus, our Best Friend Message: make friends for yourself Our Lord Jesus Christ knows the importance of friendship. He knows we cannot survive in isolation. A tree cannot make a forest. God even said in the book of Genesis that “it is not good for a man to be alone” (Genesis 2:18). Man is a social being. He is created for companionship. He needs others and others need him. Friendship is the best gift from God. A good friend can shape and influence our lives positively whereas bad friends influence others negatively. One of the reasons why our Lord Jesus Christ came into this world is to reconcile us with God, with one another and with the environment. In the gospel of Luke 16:9-15 our Lord Jesus taught his followers the importance of friendship. He went as far as saying, “Make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous mammon, so that when it fails they may receive you into the eternal habitations.” This shows how important it is to have friends. The friendship our Lord Jesus Christ is talking about is not for his own interest; rather it is for our own interest. Whether we make friends or not that has nothing to do with our Lord Jesus Christ because he is a perfect being. The friendship he is talking about is for your own inerest. We can use what we have to get what we do not have. If you have money you can use your money to win as many friends as possible. The friends are there to encourage and support you. Our Lord Jesus Christ himself was the Master of friendship. He was not just teaching his disciples the importance of friendship he had so many friends while he was in the world. He even told his disciples, “No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for I have made known to you all that I have learnt from my Father” (John 15:15). Jesus is our best friend! Although friendship is very important but remember, not all that glitters in gold. There are so many bad friends in the world today. By their fruits you shall know them. Always keep in mind the advice of St. Paul, which says, “Do not be deceived: Bad company ruins the good morals” (I Corinthians 15:33). May God grant you good friends and deliver you from bad ones, in Jesus name – Amen!
