DEAR PARENTS & CARERS OF YEAR 12 STUDENTS: Entry to 2014 Tertiary Courses All year 12 students have received QTAC Guide to Tertiary Course booklet today. If your son or daughter was away and as a result did not receive QTAC Guide they can come to AS01 to get their copy. Please encourage your child to go through the QTAC booklet and consider applying for courses they may be interested in. The following information may be of an interest to you so that you are able to support your child with their future: What is QTAC’s Role? The QTAC Guide is published annually to assist Year 12 students to make application to university undergraduate courses (i.e. a Bachelor’s Degree), or TAFE Diploma courses. The QTAC Guide is a very comprehensive publication that should be read thoroughly before applications are made. What is QTAC’s Role? QTAC publishes course information and processes tertiary application for Queensland and northern NSW universities, TAFE, Southbank Institute of Technology (SBIT) and selected colleges. What are the options for further study after Year 12? University options include formal undergraduate courses in a range of areas. TAFE Queensland, SBIT and college courses provide a mainly practical, hands-on approach to tertiary study. Depending on the course, full-time, part-time or external study is available. When should applications be submitted? QTAC applications open 5 August 2014. The on-time application due date for courses commencing semester 1, 2015 is 30 September 2014. There is an application processing fee of $35. However, if application is lodged on or after 1 October 2014 a higher application processing fee of $130 applies. How do year 12 Students apply and how should they order their preferences? QTAC applications must be submitted online via qtac.edu.au. Applicants can list up to six preferences, and advice on ordering preferences is on page 56 of the QTAC Guide and on the QTAC website. How are applicants selected? Applicants first must meet the minimum entry requirements for a course e.g. prerequisites, auditions. After entry requirements are met, applicants compete for places based on merit. For year 12 applicants the merit is expressed as an Overall Position (OP) or QTAC selection rank (for OP ineligible students). For interstate year 12 applicants, merit is expressed as an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR). When do courses start? Students can select courses commencing semester 1 and/or semester 2, 2015 on their QTAC application. The start months are recorded against each course in the QTAC Guide and on the QTAC website. What if my child wants to take a gap period? Students intending to take a gap period between finishing year 12 and commencing tertiary study should consider deferment. Deferment enables students to secure a tertiary place before starting the gap period. This is favourable as course cut-offs change from one year to another. How much will tertiary study cost? Study costs depend on the course duration, the subject area studied, government subsidies, and the institution where the study is undertaken. Refer to the course entries in the QTAC Guide for anticipated study costs for domestic students. Is there help with costs? The Study Assist website, studyassist.gov.au, provides information to students about Australian Government assistance with financing tertiary study. Briefly (NB: there could be changes due to 2014-15 budget): • The study costs for domestic students at public universities are subsidised by the federal government. Typically, student contributions range from $14000 to $35000 for the completed course. The HECS-HELP scheme allows domestic students to gradually repay their contribution after their salary reaches approximately $49095. • TAFE and SBIT courses may be government subsidised, partially government funded or full-fee. VET FEE-HELP or FEE-HELP loans may be available for some courses. • Courses at private institutions are generally not subsidised by the government but FEE-HELP loans for study costs may be available. How can I help my child once they receive their OP and subject results? Review and discuss course preferences with your child. They can change their preferences until early January for most courses that commence in semester 1. This allows them to reconsider their options in light of new information e.g. OP and subject results released in December. What factors help ensure a successful tertiary study experience? Research show that students transition more successfully when: • They are well prepared and ready to negotiate the many changes they will face • The subjects are well matched to their interests and aptitude • The course meets their expectations and they have a realistic understanding of course requirements • They have developed a high level of self-management skills • They are resilient and communicative about their needs • They are confident and proactive when interacting with teaching, administrative and services staff • They feel that the campus is “their” place and they engage socially with their peers • They spend time on campus in both class and out of class activities • They take advantage of transition, orientation and other programs offered to help them adjust to tertiary study • They are prepared to challenge their own assumed knowledge of what tertiary study may be about and embrace the change Key Dates: 1 Aug 2014 - QTAC Application Open for Applicants 2 - 3 Sept 2014 - QCS Test 30 Sept 2014 - QTAC on-time due date for application – Processing fee $35 1 Oct 2014 – 10 Dec 14 Higher fees for late QTAC application for processing charges $130 19 Dec 2014 - The year 12 results and OPs mailed by QSA: • Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) • OPs and QCS result between A and E • A table of all OP subjects studied in years 11 and 12 with the number of semesters studied and the Level of Achievement awarded by the school in each OP subject • A summary of any other student achievements that may be relevant in the final calculation of the Ops. • An Appeal Form to be completed and forwarded to QSA within 10 days if not satisfies with any results/scores 20 Dec 2014 - QSA publishes Year 12 results, Ops and FPs in student learning accounts on the Student Connect website at: studentconnect.qsa.qld.edu.au. 22 Dec – 7 Jan Review your QTAC preferences. This letter containing ONE offer only can be downloaded using QTAC’s current applicant online service. 22 Jan 2015 QTAC applicants who receive an offer are required to respond by accepting, deferring or rejecting their offer on or before 22 Jan 2015 All courses have costs associated with them. TAFE courses and courses at Southbank Institute of Technology are Fee paying, or Partially Government Funded courses. Other non-government institutions such as Australian College of Applied Psychology, Bond University, Christian Heritage College, QANTM College, Queensland Institute of Business and Technology, JCM Academy, Mater Education and SAE Institute fees should be negotiated with the institution and FEE-Help may be available. Commonwealth supported places require students to pay a contribution toward the cost of the course. Commonwealth Supported places are offered at public institutions to Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens and holders of permanent visas. Student contributions per year for courses are outlined in a table on page 50 of the QTAC Guide. PLEASE NOTE that if you are not an Australian citizen and do not hold a Humanitarian Visa then you are not eligible to place your fees on a FEE-Help, VET FEE-Help, HECS-Help and OS FEE-Help Loans.
