DON LUGO HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER MAKES NEWS WASHINGTON DC Don Antonio Lugo journalism advisor, Annette Deming was recognized in Washington DC this past week by the Journalism Education Association (JEA) for possessing the education and experience to teach scholastic journalism and advise student publications. Mrs. Deming was recognized with the Certified Journalism Educator (CJE) credentials that now follow her name, a certificate, and a luncheon reception where a handful of teachers from across the nation joined her in the honor. Deming was one of two teachers representing Southern California. After returning from the University of Missouri and the Reynolds Journalism Institute this past summer, I knew I wanted to become certified. The amount of networking, knowledge in new media, and troubleshooting thats needed in order to advise a publication is instrumental in a programs success. I wouldnt be able to do what I do, or grow my program without the network of support I get from the folks at JEA and the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA), as well as, my principal Dr. Kimberly Cabrera, and Superintendent Wayne Joseph who were very supportive and excited about my recognition. The National High School Journalism Convention is a semiannual gathering of high school journalists and advisers sponsored by the Journalism Education Association and its partner, the National Scholastic Press Association. The associations partnered to prepare hundreds of practical and professional learning sessions, from high-profile keynotes to specific, problem-solving breakouts, hands-on workshops, discussion groups, and write-off competitions for students. Aside from receiving her award, Mrs. Deming was also asked to judge the annual write-off competition, where student journalists from all over the country submit their work for critique. I wanted a firsthand look at the expectations of the judging committee for students to compete at this level. When I saw the writing from all over the country my first thought was, My kids could totally do this and they could win! My students are excited about competing in the future. Mrs. Deming plans to remain involved in the network of journalism educators and has been asked to judge, as well as, present at the JEA spring conference in Denver, Colorado.
