Day 15 of the Lake Winnipeg Water Walk involved a degree of upset - TopicsExpress

Day 15 of the Lake Winnipeg Water Walk involved a degree of upset for the Walkers when they came across a badly injured mother bear at the side of Hwy 6, who had been hit by a vehicle. Authorities had already been notified. There were three cubs in a nearby tree watching events unfold as a Conservation officer arrived to put the mother down. Everyone knew that was the right thing to do in the circumstances, but it was still painful to watch. Ceremony prayers and song helped, but it still placed a heaviness on the day. The cubs remained in the tree while everyone was in the vicinity, and when I returned a half hour later they were gone. During the prayer ceremony, it was heartwarming to hear Shania Gould, one of the young women who walked with her family yesterday, express the hope that the mother bear had prepared her cubs to take care of themselves as her parents had prepared her. The Walkers completed about 45 kms on Day 15 and Katherine, Jessica, and Thelma were joined by brother and sister Denise And Jason Cook, Derrick (Sonny) Gould and all his family, Tina Linklater, Elaine Marsden and her daughters, as well as Mary Crate and others from Fisher River and Peguis. The Lake Walkers turned east on PR 325 at Ashern and they are now heading to Peguis First Nation. Anyone wanting to join them today will find the Walkers on PR 325 starting about 20 kms east of Ashern heading to Hodgson where they plan to end the day. Base camp is being moved to the Peguis Treaty Grounds tonight, and the Lake Walkers will complete the walk into the Peguis community Monday morning in time to attend a community feast and meeting being held for them by Elders and Grandmothers on the Treaty Grounds between 1-4 pm on Monday. In order to follow the walkers in real time visit the Lake Winnipeg Water Walk website at lakewinnipegwaterwalk.ca and click on the GPS link.
