Day 3 - The 1980s were inspirational but a difficult time for everyone, myself included. From the bleak North came salvation in the form of Joy Division. Much has been written, mythologised and eulogised about the band, but for me, they were operating on another level completely. They have never, and will never, be equalled. The majestic beauty of their music coupled with Ian Curtis poetic genius was full of fragility, tenderness and regret. They could however, be brutal too, and for me, are one of the only bands from that era who I can constantly listen to and refer back to. I must have read Torn Apart 6 times now and seen Control almost as often. Their two studio albums are works of art (musically and artistically) although I believe Martin Hannett was largely responsible for their sensational and original production, the space, the unique drum sound and the sound effects. They changed my musical life forever, particularly as I was at Manchester Poly shortly after Curtis inevitably ended his short life, and experienced its grimness first hand. I remember many a time, dancing around Dave Wicks black painted bedroom to Love Will Tear Us Apart and 24 Hours. I was going for New Dawn Fades up until the last minute, but Transmission finally won and brings back memories of Wistow Village Hall on a weekend with Brendan Costello on guitar, Dave Wick on drums, me on bass and Tim Edgley (Wistows No 1 JD collector) on vocals, powering through our own rendition of the song. youtu.be/rYaN2w6rcgk
