De Hef, built in 1927, did its job as a Railway bridge in the town of Rotterdam (NL). This bridge replaced the older one, which was a swinging bridge, but it was a complete disaster for ships, and in 1918 after yet another incident, it was replaced by this one. In 1978, a big ship collapsed into De Hef, and the bridge was heavily damaged, this was the first time that the moving part was taken out, by 4 floating cranes. since 1993 the bridge was taken out of service because the trains went through the new tunnel. Since then it has no function anymore and its a monument. Today the bridge was taken out for the second time for maintenance and overhaul. 2 floating cranes came in action, the Matador 1 and 2 with a capacity of 600 tonnes each. The lift was dependent on the tide, when the tide came up, the bridge came free from its supports and after 2 hours, they could reverse and later place it on a ponton. The total weight was 560 tonnes!
