Dear Friends, especially those in Pennsylvanias District 13 (which includes, but not limited to, King of Prussia, Lansdale, Montgomeryville, Ambler, Glenside, Willow Grove, and NE Philly), TOMORROW IS ELECTION DAY!!! Please go out and vote for my mother-in-law, Marjorie Margolies. Marjorie is running to regain her Congressional seat in Pennsylvanias 13th District. The race has come very close with Brendan Boyle trailing closely behind her, a candidate with a record of supporting anti-choice legislation. How can we let him fill this seat that is currently being held by a woman supporting a womens choice to choose what happens to her body? It would be a step backward if he were elected. Another compelling reason to vote for Marjorie is her own record in Congress. In 1993, Marjorie cast the deciding vote for President Bill Clintons budget at the time. The budget laid the groundwork for the largest expansion for our nations economy since WWII. She knew that she would lose her seat, but voted with her conscience and what she believed was in the best interests of the country instead of her own interests to keep her congressional seat. I also want to tell you my own personal story with Marjorie. This is the most compelling in my opinion because it tells a side to Marjories personal character. Its a story of a woman that looks at a room full of people and thinks to herself, Who can I help?, not, What can I gain? Its my husbands story. My story with Marjorie begins with the fall of Saigon in 1975. Four years later my biological mother paid Chinese smugglers 15 troy ounces of gold to transport us in the cramped hull of a fishing boat to escape from our homeland. We left behind everything that did not fit in a pocket. To say that it was a harrowing week-long boat trip is an understatement. Upon learning that a patrol boat was approaching our vessel, the captain tried to poison me so I would stop screaming. We were boarded by Thai pirates and many daughters were abducted to unknown fates never to see their families again. The drama did not end when finally arriving to Palau Bidong, Malaysia, the site of a UN Refugee camp. My mother refused to disembark until she was given a tire. She did not know how to swim. She tied me to her back with 2 pairs of pants and started kicking for the shore....100 feet away. Upon reaching it we saw my cousin crying on her knees in the sand. We thought she was overjoyed to have reached land. Instead, she was weeping for her two year old son who had aspirated too much saltwater. I was fortunate to have arrived safely to America. My file found its way to Marjorie and we were placed with her family. I became a part of a family of 11 children which included 4 stepsisters; Evie, Elsa, Vera, Margot. Two adopted sisters; Holly and Lee Heh. My brother Marc was 24 months old and Andrew was born later. My three cousins escaped from Vietnam a few years later and each time Marjorie opened up her home to them helping them each attend college. There has always been a desire within her to help others. I remember coming home from school one day to discover that an Argentinian family had moved into our home and would stay for 6 months. Marjorie had literally opened up her home again to help this family in need as they awaited a liver transplant for their sick baby. Had I not been helped by Marjorie when I first arrived in this country, perhaps I would not have even gone to college or finished medical school. I often wonder how my life would have been altered had my file landed on the desk of another social worker in 1979. She has made a difference in my husbands life, as well as many others, and I know she can make the difference in the lives of many more as a member of Congress. So, please, go out and exercise your right to vote tomorrow and vote for Marjorie Margolies. https://marjorie2014/
