Decorating the Tucson Man Cave No doubt you are familiar with the “man cave,” that room (usually in the basement) that’s abandoned by the rest of the family and given up to the man of the house to use as a refuge. For some guys, the man cave is a workshop, someplace where they can fire up loud power tools and make stuff. For most guys, though, it’s a den of creature comforts. A flatscreen TV, comfy chair, things on the wall that would not make the cut in any home decorating magazine and easy access to snacks and liquid refreshments. Windows are optional and plants are strictly out. The ideal man cave is dark —all the better to watch the Cardinals on the big screen television. What is one likely to find in the typical Tucson man cave? Here are a few ideas. 1. Big TV with a killer sound system. When a guy sits down to watch a Cardinals game in his man cave, it has to be on a big, flat screen TV. The bigger the better. And you can bet the TV is going to be connected to a sound system that makes every hit sound like someone just hit the wall with a sledgehammer. On the odd occasions when the TV is off, the stereo will be pumping classic rock. Loudly. 2. The recliner. It might be leather, it might be plush, and it might even be a repurposed car seat or barber’s chair, but there has got to be at least one seat that reclines for optimal comfort and optional napping. Expect it to occupy the prime real estate with a direct view of the TV. 3. Trophies and awards on display. High school football trophies, ribbons from the hotdog eating contest, you name it. Part of a man cave is reliving past glories and if you can’t point to the proof, it didn’t happen. 4. Memorabilia on the walls. Paint color isn’t that important because you can expect the walls to be covered with old traffic signs, movie posters, team pennants, autographed photos, mounted fish and old jerseys. 5. The mini fridge. Because no man wants to leave the comfort and seclusion of his man cave to grab a frosty beverage, expect a mini fridge —probably sporting a Cards logo and within easy reach of the recliner. If you want to know how common the man cave is in this area, one place to start is with Tucson internet service providers. They’ll be able to tell you how many homes are signing up for satellite TV, ordering sports packages, getting online to set up their Xbox Live and hooking it all up to 60-inch screens. All clear signs that there’s a man cave in the house. Helen Beck is a Phoenix-based sports blogger who writes about every aspect of Cardinals, relying on channelchoicetv, newspaper coverage and fan sites for the latest news. According to Helen, next year is looking good, so it’s well worth considering Cards season tickets or an NFL satellite package.
