Deficient rain create drought like situation in Senapati,Tamenglong MU NEWS/ IMPHAL, July 11 : Deficient rain in Manipur has created drought like situation in the paddy fields located in the highlands of Senapati and Tamenglong districts. Lack of adequate rainfall has delayed transplantation of paddy in Noney area in Tamenglong district.Farmers of Noney area when contacted said the problem has been further compounded by non-availability of proper irrigation system in their terrace paddy fields. The farmers of Noney,Marangching,Lukhambi and Awangkhul areas in the Zeliangrong community dominated hill district have urged the concerned authority to provide water pumping set and other necessary equipments so as to facilitate irrigation of their field. “Water from Ejei and Eril streams could be utilized for the dry paddy fields”, says a farmer from Noney on phone.”We could have been completed our planting period latest by first week of July.” He also made a fervent appeal for arranging several alternative means as farming is their main occupation and source of livelihood. Echoing a similar feeling, farmers of Tadubi, Purul and Paomata blocks in Senapati district are yet to complete paddy plantation in their respective fields due to lack of monsoon rain. “More than 60 percent of our terrace fields are left without any plantation activities till date due to deficient rain this year”,Ngaoning, a farmer from Oklong area in Senapati district said. “Our plantation could be completed by now if we had adequate rain.” Another farmer Kangba Piki of Maram also shared a similar feeling. In view of the development farmers from Chilivai and Paomata areas have also expressed their apprehension over the unavailability of the rice in their region. They have also expressed their desire to have necessary alternative support from the concerned authority. The farming community of the Senapati district, who depends their livelihood on their annual harvest, wants the government help in resolving the situation. Manipur had faced drought like situation in 2009 wherein the state government tries to assist the needy farmers in dealing with the situation. However this time the state authority is yet to spell out the strategic agricultural plans.
