Diplomatic Herald Provides Timely Coverage, In-Depth Analysis Where in one place can one find information on President Nursultan Nazarbayev’s important visits abroad and visits to Kazakhstan by foreign heads of state and government? What priorities are there in the work of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs? Which countries has Minister of Foreign Affairs Erlan Idrissov visited recently and whom has he met in Astana? How are Kazakhstan’s relations developing with, say, Austria? How are Kazakhstan’s regions doing, for example, the Zhambyl region? What is the religious situation in CIS countries and what is Kazakhstan’s approach in this delicate area? If you asked yourselves such questions recently, then the most recent issue of the Diplomatic Herald is for you. It is an informational and analytical magazine published by the MFA since 2004 and issued now in Kazakh, Russian and English once every two months. In the new issue we tried to not only record very intensive foreign policy activities of Kazakhstan, but also to take a deeper look into the most interesting subjects as we see them. A number of respected authors shared their views on the status and future of the relations between Kazakhstan and Austria which recently marked their 20th anniversary. They include Kairat Abdrakhmanov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Kazakhstan to Austria whose opinion is called “From the Heart of Eurasia to the Heart of Europe.” Another author is Walter Schwimmer, Secretary General of the Council of Europe in 1999-2004 and current Chairman of the International Coordination Committee of the World Public Forum of the Dialogue of Civilizations, who shared his views in a piece called “From Peace at Home to Peace Abroad”. Michael Mueller, Commercial Attaché at the Austrian Embassy in Astana spoke about a new business drive between Austria and Kazakhstan. Nazira Wimmer, who had married an Austrian, shared her impressions of creating the living bridge between the two nations, while Serik Myrzakhmetov, First Secretary of the Embassy of Kazakhstan in Vienna, told his story of working to promote closer relations between the two countries. Tuleutai Suleimenov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan in 1991-94 and currently professor of the Academy of State Management under the President of Kazakhstan, shared his memoirs of the early years of independent Kazakhstan’s diplomacy and of the problems and challenges it had to face then. Kanat Bozumbayev, Akim (Governor) of the Zhambyl region expressed his vision of the future development of that region which boasts great potential in chemical industry, power production and agriculture. Last but not least, Kairat Lama Sharif, Chairman of Kazakhstan’s Agency for Religious Affairs, shared his views on the timely problems in the religious field in CIS countries and suggested ways to resolving them.
