Division 1 Scholarship Breakdown by Derek at SunshinePreps.net - I could only spend a few minutes on this while a video was rendering so forgive if it is not exact... By the numbers - roughly 16,000 high school football prgrams in the country. Assuming 50 kids on a team and a 55% SR, 30% JR, 10% SO, and 5% FR, there will be roughly 440,000 Senior prospects playing on Friday night. At the same time, there are roughly 125 D1A programs, 125 D1AA programs, 170 D2 programs, 245 D3 programs and 85 NAIA programs totaling right at 750 4 year college football programs across the country. What does this mean?? Well if we use these numbers, a total of 440,000 are competing for a roster spot (scholarship and non-scholarship). Now there is no uniform % across all levels of play and even within the same divisions different rules apply so for the sake of argument, lets use some numbers that are close on average. Lets say a D1A program offers an average of 25 scholarships a year and offers 10 walk on spots a year. This means that 440,000 high school players are competing for 3,125 spots (125X25). An amazing .7% So basically 99% of all senior football players are NOT D1A prospects. To add further perspective, there are right at 125 D1AA (yes I know, its FCS but I am old school) that may offer an average of 13 a year (taking into account some programs are not athletic scholarship offering programs). So when you add this number, an additional 1,625 scholarship opportunities are created. So 3,125 + 1,625 = 4,750. What does this mean? Only 1% of high school seniors are D1A or D1AA prospects. Which also means 99% of all seniors are NOT D1A or D1AA prospects. Lets dig deeper. Now lets add other scholarship opportunities that may exist at the D2 NAIA levels. Again, there are some different levels of offers amongst these levels but just using an average, lets say 10 scholarships are offered across 170 D2 programs and 85 NAIA programs. This number equals 1,020. Now lets add this number to the D1 numbers and see what we get. A total of 5,770 scholarship opportunities may exist at 4 year universities for the 440,000 high school seniors playing the game they love oon Friday night. Now our % grows to a whopping 1.3%. So now 98.7% of high school seniors playing high school football ARE NOT scholarship type of players. Just some food for thought as parents and players think lower division football is beneath them. If that call from a coach comes through, realize you are fighting to be in the top 1% of all football players and realize how lucky you are to be in that position.
